Coming soon: Woven Hand’s “Ten Stones”

Woven Hand

April is shaping up to be a fine month for musical releases. Sun Kil Moon and Portishead are releasing new albums, and now, I’ve just found out that Woven Hand will be releasing Ten Stones next month as well (exact date TBA). Sounds Familyre has more:

This April, David Eugene Edwards takes to the road and sets the stage for the release of Ten Stones, the follow-up album to his extraordinary Mosaic. For this unique set of shows, Edwards is joined by the masterful Ordy Garrison on percussion to create an otherworldly sound that is stripped-down, driving, immediate, potent. The fourth full-length release under the moniker Woven Hand, Ten Stones is produced by Edwards and Daniel Smith (Danielson), engineered by Smith and Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), and features the formidable talents of Peter Van Laerhoven (guitar), former 16 Horsepower bandmate Pascal Humbert (bass), Garrison (drums), Nikolaisen (guitar), and Danielson’s Elin K. Smith (vocals).

There are also some tourdates listed, including one in Des Moines, Iowa on April 19.

I feel like I might’ve asked you this a year or two ago, but I’ve forgotten your response:  I’m only vaguely familiar with Edwards’ work, but I remember really liking what I had heard.  Where’s a good place to start?  Should I look to Wovenhand or reach back to his work with 16 Horsepower?

    You don’t know me but here’s my 2c :)

Personally I’d suggest for 16HP you check out Low Estate or Secret South.  Low Estate is more raw, Secret South more straight-up rock.

For Woven Hand the S/T album is more folky and bright, and Consider the Birds is more dark and emotional.

It took me a while to get into all of his stuff, it’s all a little unapproachable at first I think.  But keep at it!

For 16HP, I’m a big fan of “Sackcloth ‘N’ Ashes”. It was the first 16HP release I heard, and it remains my favorite.

As for Woven Hand, my favorite is “Consider The Birds” followed by the first self-titled release.

As much as I love 16HP, I think that the Woven Hand material is a little stronger, if only because it’s basically a solo project and you get Edwards’ vision in as distilled a manner as possible.
