No Country For Old Men (or, Javier Bardem Is Giving Me Nightmares)

I’ve not read Cormac McCarthy’s No Country For Old Men (though I’m in the middle of The Road). But I am very familiar with the work of the Coen Brothers, and their involvement would be reason enough for me to see their upcoming adaptation of McCarthy’s novel. And everything I’ve heard of the film—for example, its reception at this year’s Cannes festival—has me thinking this film is something special.
Sealing the deal, however, is this recent trailer, which is not only full of haunting sights and sounds, but also features Javier Bardem (Collateral, The Sea Inside) being such a malevolent bad-ass, he could probably make Death himself pee his pants.
No Country For Old Men will be released here the States on November 21, 2007.

July 24, 2007 9:26pmBased on what I’ve read about the book (like you, I haven’t read it), it seems that they cut this trailer with a much more wide-appealing vibe (explosions, etc) than the movie itself might have. I’ve heard it’s dark as heck (on a par with Blood Simple) and the pacing is slower and more foreboding, with a couple bursts to keep you wondering what’s going to happen next.
I can’t wait to see it. After the downright awful “Intolerable Cruelty” and “The Ladykillers” (which I couldn’t bring myself to see), it seems that the Coen Brothers might be back on course.

July 24, 2007 10:01pmI’ve heard it’s darker than dark as well, with little of the humor that most folks have probably come to expect from the Coens.
And I might be the only one, but I didn’t mind “Intolerable Cruelty” all that much. Sure, it’s no “Raising Arizona” or “O Brother, Where Art Thou”, but it’s decent in its own way.
“The Ladykillers”, on the other hand, just felt like the Coens were working on cruise control. Which is a shame, because there was some intriguing and potentially great stuff in there.
