Oh the irony of it all!

Oh the irony of it all!

I know I should be in bed right now, but I was perusing BoingBoing and came across this most interesting article.

Apparently, Hilary Rosen—yes, that Hilary Rosen, former head of the RIAA—is in a bit of a huff because she can’t download music from other online stores onto her iPod.  She can only put music from Apple’s own music store, or from music she rips from her own CDs.  And apparently, this is “cruel”, “anti-consumer”, and other bad things.

Wow… apparently she’s forgotten that the RIAA, the very agency she fronted all those years, consistently persecuted music listeners with draconian copyright measures (many of which were complete bombs) and forced digital rights management (DRM) crap down our throats.  Complain about Apple’s “cruelty” all you want, but the RIAA had quite a bit to do with bringing all of this “anti-consumer” behavior about.

Copyfight has an excellent rebuttal of Rosen’s claims right here.  And needless to say, Slashdot is already a-hopping with the comments.

Mothers always say, “Make sure you think before you speak.“ Otherwise you might create an unneeded, embarrassing situation for yourself.

It’s likely she gave the whole issue a lot of thought—I mean, the silliness of what these people are doing!  After stewing on the issue for a while, she sits down and knows exactly what to say, on why this particular issue has her so undeniably vexed.  But, you know, maybe she could’ve taken that one small step backward to look with another perspective, albeit anyone aside from herself, and notice that—hey, you sound a bit silly saying that. But, oh well!

Apparently, Ms. Rosen has a guilt-free conscience.
