“Speed Racer”
Speed Racer is an undeniable treat. Not the healthiest or most thought-provoking treat, to be sure, but an incredibly fun and satisfying treat nevertheless.
“Iron Man”
Iron Man can be enjoyed as a big budget popcorn-type of movie, but like Batman Begins and X-Men 2, there are deeper subtexts and themes that you can tease out if you so desire, and you can do so without ruining the pure, thrill-packed entertainment one bit.
“5 Centimeters Per Second”
Makoto Shinkai’s latest is an hour-long exploration of nostalgia, longing, and unrequited love. And like his previous films, it’s quite lovely and affecting. But it explores those themes so fully, that one can’t help but wonder where his career will go from here.
“Appleseed Ex Machina”
In the end, Appleseed Ex Machina is primarily disappointing because it squanders so much of the depth and potential that existed in the original Appleseed movie.
“Stardust”
Stardust is a wonderful story—in the book, at least. And the filmmakers get it wrong on nearly every count, removing every bit of wit, cleverness, subtlety, mystery, and sadness that exists in the novel, and all so they can have a big, bad-ass, pyrotechnics-filled—and utterly generic—Hollywood fantasy film.
