Park Avenue Music - “By Hearts+Horses”

Park Avenue Music’s latest is more experimental and less straightforward than their previous work, but it’s just as lovely and intimate.

Cut Copy - “In Ghost Colours”

Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours is the finest “shameless ‘80s appropriation album” that I’ve heard so far in 2008. But it has a lot more going for it than just nostalgia and retro appeal.

Lovespirals - “Long Way From Home”

Long Way From Home—the third album from Lovespirals—is more straightforward than anything the band has done in the past, blending together dreampop, more forthright pop, jazz, Americana, and even blues to create a blissed-out album. Nothing revelatory or earth-shattering, but still very pleasant to listen to when you need some downtime.

Minikon - “Hope”

State Bird - “Marching Thru The Wilderness”

The Innocence Mission - “We Walked In Song”

The Clientele - “God Save The Clientele”

Ryan Francesconi & Lili De La Mora - “Eleven Continents”

Rumskib - “Rumskib”

Low - “Drums And Guns”

Joy Electric - “The Otherly Opus”

Tracey Thorn - “Out Of The Woods”

The Artificial Sea - “City Island”

Junior Boys - “So This Is Goodbye”

Sufjan Stevens - “Songs For Christmas”

Secret Shine - “Beyond Sea And Sky”

It’s been something like ten years since Secrent Shine released any new material (much of the band’s Sarah Records-based back catalogue was re-released in 2004 on Clairecords), and it’s almost as if the band has been stuck in a timewarp.  The press release may mention the likes of Mogwai and Sigur Rós, but make no mistake, this is straight up old school shoegazer circa 1993.  If Kathryn Smith’s wispy vocals on “Lost Memory” don’t cause the Lush memories to come rushing back, than you have much better ears than I, my friend.

Shane Bartell - “Too Soon To Say”

Monster Movie - “All Lost”

Scott Walker - “The Drift”

Kunek - “Flight Of The Flynns”
